CUACS's Home Page          Centered on your Success Home Page

Founded in 1966 in response to the demands of urbanization, the Center for Urban Affairs and Community Services (CUACS) has become a vital part of the extension and public service program of NC State University. Conducting research to improve the lives of North Carolina citizens, CUACS serves the state of North Carolina, its municipalities, nonprofit organizations, and other colleges and universities. In addition to applied research and program evaluation needs, CUACS also provides technical assistance and related support for many public sector agencies and programs.

Impacts and Achievements

CUACS works extensively with the NCDPI statewide testing and accountability program to:

  1. implement new and revised tests based on revised statewide curriculum

    and
  2. implement alternate assessments for students who are exempted from regular testing continued this year.

Improved technology allows for better communication between remote sites since 115 school systems are served by CUACS. Significant progress has been made in developing on-line testing for all high schools.

Center for Urban Affairs Partners with DPI and Others to Conduct the First MAKING TRACKS Video Competition to Help Keep School Children Safe

On Monday, October 15, State Superintendent Dr. June Atkinson recognized the efforts of NC State's Center for Urban Affairs, who partnered with the Department of Public Instruction and others to conduct the first MAKING TRACKS video competition to raise awareness among students and parents about pedestrian safety.

Students were challenged to focus on the important rules of pedestrian and school bus safety. Entries were received from all over the state. The 1st place team also received a $250 gift certificate and all top entries received Making Tracks t-shirts. Winning videos were shown at the School Bus Safety exhibit at the 2012 State Fair.
